Significant soil contamination
was observed in the soil sample collected at 5 feet from MW5, which appeared to
attenuate as observed in the soil sample collected at 15 feet from MW5. The total depth
of the borings and subsequent monitoring wells were 15 feet. Groundwater samples were
collected on March 7, 1996 from MW1 - MW6. Groundwater contamination was detected
at significant levels in MW4 and MW5. The well constructions of MW1 - MW3 may affect
the concentrations which are observed since these wells are screened from 20 to 10 feet
and groundwater was monitored on March 7, 1996 between 5.97 and 8.12 feet. Methyl
tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) at 6.0 ppb was detected and confirmed with GC-MS in the
groundwater sample collected from MW5.
The June report included the results from the groundwater samples collected on June 4,
1996 and the monitoring of depth to water which was between 6.48 and 9.77 feet.
Groundwater contamination was detected at significant level in MW1, MW2, MW4 (free
product) and MW5 (free product). MTBE contamination was detected in MW1, MW4,
MW5, and MW6. Please note that Table 2 erroneously reported the MW2 ethylbenzene
result. According to the McCampbell Analytical report, 9.6 ppb was detected rather than
the 8.6 ppb which was reported on Table 2. Please make the necessary correction prior to
submittal of the next quarterly report.
The report included a conclusion that "Additional monitoring wells may be required to
define the dissolved hydrocarbon plume to the satisfaction of PHSIEHD". Since free
product levels were evidenced in MW4 and MW5 and the plume boundary to the east and
west of these wells is not defined, PHS/EHD requests the submittal of a work pian to
install additional monitoring wells to define the extent of soil and groundwater
contamination.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
