A ) Combustible Gases and vapors
Potentiallyexplosive
concentrations of gases and vapors
will be monitored at least once every 15 minutes dur:.ng
sampling activities us+ng a comb4stxble gas me,er. If at
any time the concentration exceeds 20-W of the lower
explosive limit ( LEL) , activities will stop and the area
Xf will be evacuated until gas levels have been reduced to less
than 20W of the LEL and the source of combustible gases or
vapors has been determined.
B) Total Organic vapors
A direct reading photoionizatiun detection (PID) meter (HNTV
PI 101 or equivalent) will be used to monitor the
P concentrations of organic vapors in the nark area
Measurements will be taken at least since every 15 minutes
during surface and subsurface sample collection. rhe meter
will be calibrated oath isobutyl.ene. Total organx,c vapor
measurements will be used to determine the appropriate
levels of respiratory protection and conditions for site
evacuation. Total organic vapor concentrations an the
workers breathing zone in excess of 10 ppm above background
will trigger sampling for oenzene with a direct reading
colormetrxc tube. Breathing zone concentrat3.ons in excess
` of 500 ppm will stop the work on-site until the work zone
concentrations are reduced to below 500 ppm.
C) RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
If total organic vapors ixceed 10 ppm in additional sampling
A for benzene will, be performed using direct ±eadang
colormetrac tubes. If benzene concentrations exceed 10 ppm,
personal protection will be increased to Level C.
EMPLOYEE TRAINVNFG AND iiF oRmrioN
Prior to site activity, waterwork will conduct training for all
site peasonnel without a previous doc=entad hazardous waste
training coarse. The training will have the following
objectives:
Ensure that workers are aware of potential hazards
Y they may encounter.
m
r
