STATE OF CALIFORNIA
ill_ I '988
_ GEORGE DEUKMEJIAN,Governor
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL E30AWYRONMENTAL HEALTH
CENTRAL` VALLEY REGION PERMIT/SERVICES e
3443 ROUTIER ROAD
SACRAMENTO,CA 95827-3098
26 July 1988
Mr. Ted Knowles
1140 West Hammer Lane
Stockton, California 95207
KNOWLES GAS STATION, 1140 WEST HAMMER LANE, STOCKTON
Thank you for submittal of the layout map of the old facility and
proposed new facility. In addition, Groundwater Technology,
Incorporated (GTI) submitted a Preliminary Report (PR) for your
facility which we received on 21 July 1988 . Jim Grasty of GTI
reported that a typographical error in Table 3 (concentrations
are in parts per billion (ppb) not parts per million (ppm) ) will
be corrected and a corrected page will be submitted.
It is apparent that soil and groundwater contamination has been
found at your site. Therefore, a Problem Assessment Report (PAR) ,
as described in the enclosure, is required. Please submit a PAR
within 60 days of receipt of this letter. A request for extension
of the deadline should be submitted with an explanation in
writing.
The PAR requires that the extent of soil and ground water
contamination be determined and presented in map and cross
section form. Existing soil data may be sufficient to delineate
the extent of soil contamination but it is apparent that more
monitoring wells are needed to determine the extent of ground
water contamination. Soil remediation must be considered prior to
construction of the new facility because the new construction
would interfere with any excavation of contaminated soils.
If yqu 'have any questions, please contact me at (916) 361-5740 or
Scott Walker at (916) 361-5706.
PORDON BOGGS
nderground Tank Program Coordinator
SDW: sdw
ENCLOSURE
cc: .
