NOW
San Joaquin Local Health District ,.' f
202/799-5005 . 01 Vdf 1
June 17 , 1988
Page 2 JUN 2 0 L089
CRWQCB-V) , GTI proposes to implement the o OMENTAL HEAM steps :
Drill one deep soil boring and ten shallow borings to
determine the presence and/or extent of soil contami-
nation ( if encountered) through laboratory analyses of
selected soil samples .
Survey the existing well heads for elevation control to
be used in conjunction with monitoring data to de-
termine water level fluctuations, an estimated ground-
water flow direction, and the local groundwater
gradient .
Collect water samples from the existing monitoring
wells and submit to an analytical laboratory for
analysis .
Prepare a "Preliminary Report" following the CRWQCB-V
guidelines that will include data from the afore-
mentioned work steps and all work to date.
WORK STEPS
One deep soil boring would be drilled with a truck-mounted drill
rig using 8-inch diameter hollow-stem augers . The boring would
be completed to a maximum depth of 50 feet below surface grade
and logged by a GTI geologist using the Unified Soil Clas-
sification System (see Appendix I ) . The boring would be located
in the middle of the old tank pit (see Figure 2 , Site Plan) .
Soil samples from the boring would be collected during drilling
at approximately 5-foot intervals, beginning at 5 feet below
surface grade . Samples would be obtained using a 2 . 5-inch
outside diameter (O .D . ) split-spoon sampler, lined with three 2-
inch diameter by 6-inch long brass sample tubes . The sampler
will be driven 18 inches ahead of the augers at each sample
point . Each sample would be field screened by visual obser-
vation and with a Photovac TIP photo-ionization detector (PID) .
The collected samples will be sealed, capped, and placed on ice
in an insulated cooler for subsequent delivery to an analytical
laboratory accompanied by a Chain-of-Custody manifest .
Ten shallow soil borings would also be drilled with the same
equipment used to drill the deep boring. The borings would be
completed to depths less than 5 feet below surface grade . The
borings would be located in the vicinity of the old pump islands
and product delivery lines (see Figure 2 ) .
