 .
P, Knowles Gas Station
202/799-5027.02
July 21, 1988
Fa The station formerly dispensed diesel fuel in addition to
.' regular, unleaded and premium unleaded gasoline. The fuels were
stored on-site in six underground storage tanks, four
6,000-
gallon and two 12,000-gallon tanks. The four 6,000-gallon tanks
j have been in use for the past 27 years, while the two 12,000-
gallon tanks have only been in service for the last 7 years.
There are no known septic tanks in the area, and all underground
- utilities have been marked in the street by the appropriate
utility company.
On March 17, 1988, all buildings, pump islands, underground
{ fuel storage tanks and product lines wereremoved (see Figure 2,
}_
I Site Plan) . During the tank removal procedure, the SJLHD
sinspected the excavation and determined that hydrocarbon con-
tamination was evident. However, according to the site operator t
Mr. Knowles, inventory records indicate nor
product discrepancies
have occurred since the station began operation. Soil samples t
- a
were collected. from the tank excavation at the site, and sub-
sequent laboratory analyses prompted the SJLHD to request an
initial groundwater Investigation.
F
7
r u Subsequently, soil borings (SB) were drilled and monitoring
( wells (MW) were installed on-site on September 24, 1987 (see
Figure 2' and Appendix 1, Drill Logs) .
( ' Pp . Monitoring wells MW-1
e.
through MW-3 were drilled to total depths of 65 feet, with MW-1
' r ~ and. MW-2 screened from 35 feet below surface to total depth. MW_
3 -was screened from 25 to 55 feet below surface due to drilling
- --difficulties- which- hampered the well aom letion
p process. Resents ;
of laboratory analyses of the associated soil and groundwater
1 samples are summarized in the following .sections and presented in
a Appendix 11.
r
0
