envirometal
technologies
inc. Memorandum
To: Jim Huff chuff@huffnhuff.com)
' From: Mike Duchene, EnviroMetal Technologies Inc.
Date: 28 June 2004
Re: Iron Leaching Data—32167.88
As part of the design for permeable reactive barriers that were constructed in the State of
California, EnviroMetal Technologies Inc. (ETI) completed bench-scale testing which
' involved pumping groundwater collected from each site through a column packed with
granular iron. The granular iron was from the same manufacturer as proposed for injection at
the French Camp site (Connelly-GPM). As part of the bench-scale test, samples of the
groundwater from the influent and effluent were collected and analyzed for inorganic
compounds. Table 1 lists the results for three column studies. These tests are designed to
' simulate in situ conditions.
As shown in Table 1, the concentration of most inorganic compounds decreases as the
groundwater flows through the column of granular iron due to precipitation reactions that
occur in the granular iron. For these studies, it was concluded that any precipitates that
1 formed in the granular iron would not have a long-term negative effect on system hydraulics.
The only compounds that increased in concentration were iron and, at one site, manganese.
Dissolved iron is produced from the corrosion of the granular iron. The granular iron contains
a small fraction of manganese (typically less than 0.5%), and depending on the geochemistry
of the groundwater, may leach from the granular iron over the short term. As the groundwater
flows from the granular iron zone, the geochemistry of the groundwater will return to
background levels. Both of these metals should precipitate in the aquifer sediments under
typical aquifer conditions.
745 Bridge Street West, Suite 7
Waterloo, Ontario
Canada N2V 2G6
' Tel 519.746.2204
Fax 519.746.2209
Web page:www.eti.ca
