i
1 '
3.0 Field Activities
Field activities included excavating approximately 80 cubic yards of soil from the ,
location of the former 2,000 gallon gasoline UST (East Excavation), and 4
approximately 250 cubic yards of soil from the location of the for'mee 1 ,000 gallon
waste oil UST (West Excavation). The East Excavation removed approximately 40
cubic yards of hydrocarbon impacted soil, and approximately 40 cubic yards of "clean"
overburden material. The excavation reached a depth of 15 feet BSG. The West
Excavation removed approximately 150 cubic yards of hydrocarbon impacted soil and
100 cubic yards of "clean" overburden soil. This excavation reached a depth of 20 feet
BSG. The excavations are shown on the Site Map included as Exhibit 2.
4.0 Excavation Procedures
On September 16 and 17, 1992, Jim Thorpe Oil performed excavation operations
using a John Deere 690C excavator and a John Deere 410C backhoe. The "clean"
overburden material was removed first, field screened, stockpiled 30 to 40 feet from
the excavation, and covered with visquene. The "clean" material consisted of the j
upper 6 feet from the East Excavation and the upper 4 to 5 feet from the West
Excavation. The contaminated soil was temporarily stockpiled adjacent to the
excavations, and also covered with visquene. This soil will be transported to an
apor priate landfill, and the disposal procedures will be discussed in the final report.
A temporary fence was erected around the excavations.
4.1 Field Screening of Soil
Soil was collected from the excavator bucket near the teeth and then placed in a
mason jar to approximately 50%.capacity, shaken and stored for a period of 15
minutes. The top of the mason jar was then pierced, and analyzed with a Foxboro
Model 128 OVA/GC Flame-ionizing detector (FID). A standard headspace reading
was collected at this time and noted. When field observations of stain and odor, and
FID-readings from the base and sidewalls indicated "non-detect", confirmation soil
samples were collected.
4.2 Confirmation Soil Sampling (First Round)
Confirmation soil samples were collected on September 16 and 17, 1992
(immediately after excavation), at the locations selected by the on-site County
representative as the most likely to contain the greatest hydrocarbon concentrations
5 of 10
