C. V
• ASSOCIATES I N C .
accordance with ATC Associates' Workplan for Subsurface Investigation at Inland Paint
Company, 117 West Harding Way, Stockton, California, dated September 4, 1997. The
workplan was verbally approved by San Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental
Health Division (PHS/EHD).
Soil Sample Collection
On January 8, 1998, an ATC Associates geologist supervised the advancement of one soil boring
to 41.5 feet bgs. A site plan showing the soil boring location is included as Figure 2. Drilling was
conducted by V&W Drilling (State C57 license no. 710678) utilizing a hollow stem auger drill rig.
A field geologist logged all drill cuttings and cored soil samples utilizing the Unified Soil
Classification System. Cored soil samples were collected at five-foot intervals using a 2-inch
diameter split-spoon sampler containing three brass tubes. The cored samples and drill cuttings
were characterized for soil type, moisture content, and visual evidence of petroleum
contamination. Descriptions of soil types encountered and sample collection intervals are
presented on the boring log contained in Attachment 1.
Each soil sample was field screened with a Photoionization Detector (PID) for the presence of
volatile organic compounds. The measured PID readings ranged from 667 parts per million
• (ppm) at 5.5 feet bgs to 7 ppm at 41.5 bgs, the maximum depth explored. Soil sample tubes were
then sealed at each end using Teflon tape and plastic end caps, labeled, and placed on ice.
Selected soil samples were kept on ice and delivered under chain-of-custody documentation to
State-certified American Environmental Network (AEN) laboratory (DOHS Cert. No. 1172) for
chemical analysis. PID readings are contained on boring log in Attachment 1 and field notes are
contained in Attachment 2.
Groundwater S_ample Collection
A Hydropunch groundwater sampling probe was advanced by V & W Drilling in soil boring SB 1.
The probe was hydraulically driven into the ground to a depth of 1 to 2 feet beneath the
groundwater piezometric surface. A field geologist was present to supervise the investigation and
collect a groundwater sample. Descriptions of field conditions encountered and sample collection
details were recorded and are contained in Attachments 1 and 2. Subsequent to the sample
collection, the open sampling hole was tremie grouted to the surface with neat cement.
Soil and Groundwater Sample Analis
Selected soil samples and groundwater samples from boring SB 1 were placed on ice and delivered
to AEN laboratory. Soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline and
diesel (TPHg and TPHd) by EPA Methods 8015; and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by
EPA Method 8260. Groundwater samples were analyzed for TPHg, TPHd, VOCs, and
halogenated volatile organic compounds (HVOCs) by EPA Method 8010/8020.
w:1172951repoM\sum.doc 2
