APPENDIX A
Page'1
FIELD INVESTIGATION METHODOLOGY
Soil Bor ing Construction and Same lin
The soil borings were drilled by Westex Drilling with a truck-mounted Mobile B-53 drill rig
equipped with hollow-stem augers. Soil samples.'were collected from each boring at five-foot
maximum intervals with a modified Californiaer alifornia sampler equipped - .
p q pped with clean,.two-inch diamete r,
six-inch long brass tubes; samples and drill cuttings were described in the field using the Unified
Soil Classification System (USCS). Logs describing the soils encountered in each boring are
presented on Plates 3. through 5-
Sample tubes were sealed with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-coated sheets, plastic end caps and
duct tape to,reduce volatile hydrocarbon loss. The samples were screened in the field with an
`
organic vapor analyzer (OVA) to evaluate potential hydrocarbon, content. Selected samples were
Placed in an ice chest containing ice, and submitted under chain-of-custody to a California-- `
certified laboratory for analysis of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) using Modified EPA'
l method 8015, Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Total Xylenes (BTEX),.using EPA method
8020. '
Soil generated during.drifling activities was placed on the existing soilstockpiles generated during
the removal operations. Drilling equipment was steam cleaned between borings; 'steam cleaning
rinsate was, contained in the steam cleaning rack/collection system, transferred to sealed 55-gallon
drums,and stored on site.
r Monitoring Well Construction
Borings MW-4 through MW-6 were drilled and ,sampled .as described above and converted to
monitoring wells.. Each well was constructed using two-inch diameter, flush-jointed, Schedule 40.
PVC casing; 0.02-inch slotted casing was used for the screened interval. Number 3 sand was
tremied into the-well annulus as a filter pack. The filter.pack extended from the bottom of the
screened interval to approximately two feet above the top of the screened' interval.
