4
Tosco Marketing Company two, October 29 2001
Tosco jFormer BP #11193 $202 West Hammer lane Stockton CA
Section 5192). The Health and Safety Plan will be reviewed by the field staff and
contractors prior to beginning field operations at the site.
Task 2—Dual Phase Extraction and Feasibility Testing
DPE is planned to last five days and will be conducted using a trailer-mounted DPE
system capable of generating flow rates up to 300 cubic feet per minute (cfm) and
vacuums up to 25 inches of mercury (in/Hg). SECOR will connect the DPE system to
&AW Ze t wells MW-2R and VW-1 and will extract soil vapor and liquid simultaneously from the
W10--30
wells. A thermal oxidizer will be used to treat extracted soil vapors in accordance with
"V-1 permit conditions established by the local air quality management district. The period of
g> 19-20' extraction from a given well is determined by a decrease in the influent hydrocarbon
concentrations as measured in the field using a Flame Ionization Detector (FID) or Photo
Ionization Detector (PID). Extracted groundwater will be temporarily stored on-site in a
Baker Tank (or equivalent) pending disposal at the Tosco refinery in Rodeo, California.
During operation of the DPE system, SECOR will collect soil vapor samples initially
(i.e., within two hours of system start-up) and periodically thereafter from the influent
sample port to the DPE system. SECOR will also record field parameters such as
extraction flow rates and vacuums, and the radius of influence observed in surrounding
wells. Soil vapor samples will be submitted to a California state certified laboratory for
analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) using Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA)Method 8015 modified, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
xylenes (BTEX), and MtBE using EPA Method 8020. Laboratory analytical results of
groundwater samples collected during the next quarterly sampling event will be
compared to the results of previous sampling events to evaluate the effectiveness of the
DPE unit in remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted groundwater at the site.
Task 3 - Technical Report
Following completion of the feasibility testing, SECOR will prepare a report
summarizing the procedures, field results, and analytical results. The report will include
an evaluation of current site conditions, including recommendations with regard to the
tested remediation technology.
SCHEDULE
SECOR is prepared to initiate a 5-day pilot test beginning November 26, 2001. A report
documenting the results of the feasibility testing will be submitted approximately six
weeks after the completion of the fieldwork.
TOSCO 11193/pilottest-dualphase
