16
4.0 FIELD INVESTIGATIONS
,,•;
4.1 Site Description
I
i The subject site is located on West Hammer Lane in Stockton, California (Figure 1). The site is
currently operating as a retail gasoline station and mini market. Approximate locations of the
existing onsite gasoline USTs and other pertinent site features are shown on Figure 2.
4.2 Soil Borings
ATC retained the services of Vironex of Hayward, California for advancing the boreholes. The
field investigation was performed on March 1, 1999. Underground Services Alert (USA) was
notified of the proposed drilling activities to ensure that no utility lines were located within the
immediate vicinity of the soil borings, and Cruz Brothers Sub-Surface Locators, Inc. of Milpitas,
California provided a subsurface survey of utility lines and other buried objects in and around the
borehole locations.
All soil borings, except ATC-5, were advanced to a total depth of between approximately 22 feet
to 28 feet bgs. Soil boring ATC-5 was advanced to a depth of approximately 42 feet bgs in order
to define the vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater. Groundwater was
encountered at depths ranging from approximately 4 to 9 feet bgs. The soil boring locations are
shown on Figure 3. Each soil boring was terminated at a depth sufficient to collect a
groundwater sample. All soil borings were backfilled to the surface with neat cement slurry after
sampling was completed. Soil borings were logged in the field by an ATC geologist under the
supervision of a California Registered Geologist. The soil borings were logged in accordance
with Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Boring logs are included in Appendix A.
Copies of the approved San Joaquin County Public Health Services Application for Well/Pump
Permits are included in Appendix B. A copy of the approved City of Stockton Department of
r
Public Works Application for Encroachment on Public Right-Of-Way Permit is included as
Appendix C.
4.3 Soil Sampling
Soil cores were obtained by pushing a Geoprobe Tm sampler with 4-foot long acrylic liners into
the subsurface. The borings were cored continuously. Soil boring ATC-5 was cored
H:U.EHWAN\QS_132_wVtEPORTS%dri[I pt-doc 5 ATC Associates Inc.
