Box 2009 PERMITlSERVICES
Stockton, CA 95701
Attention: Mr. Steven K. Schneider
Environmental Health Specialist
Subject: Environmental Investigation
(Phase 4), Quik Stop Market No. 132
3555 W. Hammer Lane, Stockton, California
Dear Mr. Schneider:
As we discussed by phone on Thursday, February 27, 1992, RESNA Industries Inc. (RESNA)
and Quik Stop Markets, Inc. (Quik Stop) would lake to proceed with the investigation at the Quik
Stop Market located at 3555 W. Hammer Lane, Stockton,California (Figure 1). You are aware of
the problems we have been having obtianing permission to enter the adjacent Taco Bell property.
From recent discussions we have had with Taco Bell representatives, it appears that permission to
enter their property will not be granted. We would, therefore, like to proceed with a downgradient
investigation around the Taco Bell site.
Information obtained from previous investigations indicate the presence of a perched aquifer on the
east side of the site. Quarterly groundwater monitoring has revealed that total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHG)and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylenes (BTEX)
have not been detected in groundwater samples from the local upper aquifer. Anlaysis of
groundwater samples obtained from the perched aquifer has revealed the presence of TPHG and
BTEX. Groundwater elevation measurements obtained during this monitoring have indicated that
the groundwater flow direction is easterly at a gradient of approximately 0.003. This would
indicate that the flow direction would be from the Quik Stop Market site to the Taco Bell site. It
should be noted, however, that this gradient and flow direction represent localized conditions in the
upper aquifer. Conditions in the perched aquifer may vary, however. We have no information at
this time which would indicate a variance.
It is the desire of both Quik Stop and RESNA to delineate the extent of the contaminant plume and
begin remedial activities. RESNA has received permission to enter the Burger King property on
the other side (east) of the Taco Bell property and the City of Stockton has stated they would
. approve an encroachment permit for us to work on W. Hammer Lane. It is our intention to
conduct a shallow groundwater survey adjacent to the Taco Bell along W. Hammer Lane and the
Burger King property to the east, as shown in Figure 2.
