Catalytic Oxidizer
P. For lower initial not] vnpvr concentrations, fume: gau iv,
r.outad to thea catalytic oxidiaeer (CntOx). Oxidation of
the fusna F;an its cataly:od by finely divided platinum.
Tho CatOx in approximately 8 toot by 2 fMet and standee
about 2 toot high. Thins entalyst its similar to thoeea
uceed in catalytic converters of mWearn automobiles. The
Ca.tox lima an effloont/inf.luent heat oxchanger and a
tomperature-controlled electric preheater.
The components will be plumbod through a singles manifold to each
of the five vapor extraction wells. The extraction line from
each wall will be constructed of ' 2-inch diameter Schedule 40 PVC
pipes, which will be placed approximately one foot beneath the
ground surface to prevent deterioration from sunlight and surface
traffic. The flow line from each well at the manifold will
contain a shut-oft valva to restrict or completely shut off vapor
flow, a vacuum gauge to me►aGuro in-line flow vacuum, a flow meter
_ to measure the amount of vapor flowing through the system, and a
sample port for collection of vapor samplers. This proposed
plumbing eoniguration is shown in Figure 4.
{
2.3 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
{
Gasoline-contaminated vapor will be removed from the soil through
w
the five existing vapor extraction wells (Appendix A). The five
wells will be plumbed to the 100-cfm VCU, which will induce air
floe under negative pressure (suction). The fume gas entering
` the VCU from the extraction wells is first directed through a
papier filter to remove any particulate matter that may have been
picked up from the extraction wells. The VCU is equipped with a
-. dilution air valve to allow dilution of extracted contaminated
vapors with clean atmospNlric air prior to treatment in the ThOx
or CatOx.
c52I91918/txt 4
