December 27, 1995
Page 5
General System Design
PACIFIC proposes to address hydrocarbon mass reduction (vadose, capillary fnnge, and
saturated zones)through a combination of SVE, air sparging, and enhanced biodegrada-
tion The proposed remedial program would consist of the following elements
• Continued quarterly groundwater monitoring and sampling
• Installation of proposed Wells VW-1, VW-2, VW-3, S-1, and S-2
• Short term (approximately 6 months) SVE from proposed
Wells VW-1, VW-2, and VW-3 (Figure 6), and air sparging in
proposed Wells S-1 and S-2 for bulk hydrocarbon mass removal
• Perform biodegradation assessment and mapping of dissolved oxygen,
nitrates, phosphates, and sulfates at scheduled intervals during the
application of SVE and air spargmg Measure and record the above
parameters and oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in soil vapor from
remediation system wells before and after SVE
• Upon conclusion of SVE, review additional biodegradation assessment
data, evaluate biodegradation parameters and determine possible
. applicability of biodegradation based technologies to address residual
on-site hydrocarbon impact (e g , low flow air injection, ORC, or
hydrogen peroxide injection)
• Enhanced biodegradation through oxygen injection into Well S-1 and
S-2
The SVE/air sparging system is shown on Figure 6 General design subtasks will
include specifying transport piping layout and construction requirements, specifying
extraction well requirements, detailing equipment compound layout and construction
requirements, defining electrical power distribution and systems control requirements,
and sizing equipment A set of construction drawings will be generated to facilitate the
move from design to construction and allow the acquisition of a building permit The
design will comply with all relevant electnc, building, and fire codes
In general, the system design will allow application of SVE and air sparging for bulk
hydrocarbon removal and biodegradation Initially, piping will be placed aboveground
surface and will be constructed of polyvinylchloride '
Initially, the equipment compound will be placed in the location shown on Figure 6 The
compound will be fenced to secure equipment and above-grade conduit Currently,
plans for a Taco Bell restaurant are being reviewed by the City of Stockton Planning
. Department for construction at the site Once these plans are approved, remediation
system piping, well head connections, and equipment locations will be modified to
3201333BkVnWLN3
