Ms. Daisy Wei, CH2M Hill -2- 7 July 2011
Additional Investigation
Phytoremediation has been reducing the nitrogen concentrations in monitoring wells
with one notable exception. Monitoring well KP-3 has exhibited an increasing trend in
the past few years. Koppel proposes additional investigation to assess whether there
are source areas remaining in soil that are contributing to nitrogen in KP-3. Koppel
proposes 8 additional soil sample borings including grab groundwater samples in
selected locations.
Conditional Concurrence with Sampling Work Plan
As discussed in a 1 July 2011 email concurrence transmittal, Central Valley Water
Board staff conditionally concur with the Sampling Work Plan provided the following
change is implemented:
• Groundwater discharge water and soil cuttings may be deposited on the soil surface
in vegetated areas of the site, provided that water is not allowed to run off the
property. Nothing shall be disposed of in the borehole.
Schedule
Koppel Stockton intends to implement the Sampling Work Plan the week of 11 July
2011, and provide a Report of Results with the Annual Report, which is due 31 October
2011.
Central Valley Water Board staff appreciate Koppel's work to remediate groundwater
and to investigate remaining source areas that may be contributing to nitrogen in
monitoring well KP-3.
