0
2.0 FIELD INVESTIGATIONS
<One groundwater sample will be collected and analyzed for ammonia, nitrate(both filtered and non-filtered),
and total dissolved solids at Monitoring Well 10-3.
n Sample locations are approximate and actual locations will be based on field conditions(e.g.,verification of
former bagging plant's concrete pad, access issues).
2.2.2 Field Procedures
The proposed scope of work for additional investigation at the former bagging plant
includes advancing eight shallow soil borings to a depth of approximately 6 feet for the
collection of soil samples for laboratory analysis and lithologic descriptions.Soil samples
would be collected at three depths(0 to 2 feet,2 to 4 feet, and 4 to 6 feet) at each location
(K11-01 through K11-8),as shown in Figure 4.These soil samples will be analyzed for
nitrogen as nitrate,TKN,nitrogen as ammonia,and pH.In addition,eight temporary
monitoring points will be installed at the same locations as the soil borings for the collection
of grab groundwater samples and subsequent laboratory analysis of those samples. These
temporary monitoring points will be installed to a depth of approximately 15 feet.
The shallow soil borings and temporary monitoring points will be installed using a track-
mounted direct push rig.The temporary monitoring points will be constructed of 1-inch
PVC blank casing and a 0.010 pre-packed slotted screen. Each monitoring point will have 10
feet of 0.010 pre-packed slotted screen and 5 feet of blank casing installed to a total depth of
approximately 15 feet. Grab groundwater samples collected from each of the 8 temporary
monitoring points will be analyzed for nitrogen as ammonia, nitrogen as nitrate(both
filtered and non-filtered),and total dissolved solids.A groundwater sample will also be
collected from Monitoring Well KP-3 during this field investigation and analyzed for the
same constituents as the grab groundwater samples.During sampling activities, the
physical conditions of this well will be further investigated to determine whether tree roots
have entered the well casing.Soil cuttings, purge water, and decontamination water will be
disposed on the Koppel Stockton Terminal property, down the borehole or in the planted
areas.
Prior to the installation of soil borings and temporary monitoring points,USA will be
contacted to provide utility clearance of these locations. In addition,a secondary utility
locator will provide utility locating at the boring locations. A soil boring permit will be
obtained from the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department.
2-3
