KOPPEL-STOCKTON TERMINAL
MONITORING WELL ABANDONMENT AND CONSTRUCTION WORK PLAN
The proposed well construction schematic for KP-41)is shown on Figure 3.The monitoring
well will be constructed with a 4-inch diameter 0.020-inch slot size polyvinyl chloride
casing. The borehole will be advanced to approximately 57 to 60 logs and the screen placed
from approximately 45 to 55 feet bgs. A 10-foot screen interval is proposed to include the
screen intervals of deep-screened monitoring well KP-61).The purpose of the installing
KP-4D is to provide additional data on vertical gradients and groundwater nitrogen
concentrations at greater depths.Heaving sands were encountered in nearby well KP-6D,
therefore KP-41)may be drilled deeper than 60 feet logs in order for the borehole to stabilize.
The screened interval may be modified based on the geology and depth to water observed
in the field and the ground surface elevation relative to KP-61). Refer to KP-10S-R for
additional well construction details.
The surge-and-bail method will be used for initial development of the monitoring wells
until water quality characteristics stabilize. The wells will be surged for at least 15 minutes
and then bailed for 30 minutes.Once bailing is complete, the wells will be pumped until
successive samples show stabilization of pH within 0.5 unit, temperature within 1 degree
Celsius and conductivity within 10 percent.Field parameters,purge volume,and water
levels will be recorded on well development logs.
6.0 Schedule for Well Abandonment, Construction and
Sampling
It is anticipated that well abandonment and construction will occur in mid-September 2010.
Well KP-10S will be monitored semiannually for 1 year in accordance with Water Board
Monitoring and Reporting Program (MRP)Number R5-2004-0535,dated November 10,
2004.Following 1 year of semiannual monitoring, the monitoring frequency will be reduced
to an annual basis. The schedule for well installation and sampling is presented in Table 1.
Commencing with the 2011 annual monitoring event, Monitoring Wells KP-10S-R and
KP111)will be sampled on an annual basis concurrent with the annual sampling at other site
wells.
As required by the MRP,groundwater samples collected from KP-10S-R and KP-41)will be
analyzed for nitrate as nitrogen and ammonia/ammonium. Field parameters will also be
recorded during semi-annual and annual sampling events at this well.
TABLE 1
Schedule for Monitoring Well Abandonment and Construction
Monitoring Well Abandonment and Construction Work Plan Koppel Stockton Terminal,Stockton, Califomia
Month and Year Activity
September 2010 Abandon KP-5S, KP-5D, KP-10S,and KP-BG-1.Construct KP-10-R and
KP-0D.
September 2010 Sample KP-10S-R and KP-4D as part of the 2010 annual sampling event
March 2011 Sample KP-10S-R and KP-41D
August 2010 Sample KP-10S as part of the 2011 annual sampling event
ROW 02300006(CLR4507.DOCX) 5
E°.bIW1M283/RDD
