building, under a shed like roof, located behind the warehouse
facing Hazelton Avenue, with the closest cross street Lincoln Road.
A Boring, identified as B-T, was placed by JPCA on June 24 , 1994 ,
approximately in the center of the former UST and extended to the
saturated zone, approximately 35 feet. Soil samples were collected
at each five feet commencing at 11 feet. A grab water sample was
collected. Figure 2 presents the location of the former UST area
and B-T. '
The soil and groundwater samples were analyzed for Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons as Gasoline (TPHG) and Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene
and Xylene (BTEX) using Modified EPA Methods 8015/8020 .
Based on the results of the analysis from the initial boring, San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Division (SJCEHD) required an
additional subsurface investigation to better define the extent of
the soil and possible groundwater contamination. JPCA addressed
the county requirements and prepared a workplan which was accepted
by SJCEHD.
A permit was requested and received from SJCEHD prior to drilling
the three borings and three monitoring wells. In October 1994 , the
borings and wells were completed with soil and groundwater samples
collected for analysis. The borings were identified as MW-1 , MW-2 ,
MW-3 , B-1 , B-2 and B-3 .
• Soil samples collected from a depth of 20 feet to groundwater at
approximately 30 feet were analyzed and contained gasoline and
gasoline constituents. The soil samples from borings B-1 and B-3
located north and south of the former UST had no detectable
concentrations of TPHG and/or BTEX.
The soils samples from the former UST pit area and in what maybe
identified as the area extending in the south west quadrant from
the UST pit had high concentrations of TPHG and BTEX especially in
the area below the former UST at approximately 15 to 25 feet below
grade. The soil samples collected from the borings identified as
MW-1 , MW-2 and B-2 had high concentrations of TPHG and BTEX
commencing below 20 feet and continuing to approximately 30 feet
below grade. The water bearing zone commences at approximately
some 17 feet below grade. A clay lens was encountered during the
well drilling at approximately 40 feet below grade. A decision to
not penetrate this clay layer was made to avert contamination from
the first water bearing aquifer.
Groundwater samples collected from the wells contained actionable
levels of gasoline and gasoline constituents.
The results of the samples collected from the soil borings are
shown in Table 2 as a separate table at the end of this quarterly
report. All concentrations of TPHG and BTEX are in parts per
• 2
