This work plan was requested by
PHS/EHD in their directive, dated January 27, 2000.
Project Objectives
The objectives of the proposed sampling and analysis are to confirm the cleanup of vadose
zone soil currently being remediated by soil vapor extraction and to evaluate the vertical
extent of impacted groundwater-bearing zones beneath the former underground storage tanks
(UST). To achieve these objectives, a cone penetrometer test (CPT)rig will be used to
collect multiple soil and groundwater samples from one location in the vicinity of the former
USTs. The location of the proposed sampling location is shown on the attached Figure 1.
Relevant Previous Work
On November 17, 1989, one 500-gallon gasoline UST and one 1,000-gallon gasoline UST
were removed from the site in response to a failed tank tightness test. According to the
inspector's report, a hole approximately 5-inches in diameter and numerous pin-sized holes
were observed in the tank bottom. Three soil samples collected from beneath the former
USTs contained up to 4,200 milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg) of Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons (TPH)-as-Gasoline and 21 mg/kg of benzene. These analytical results are
summarized in the attached Table 1.
