On August 13 & 14, 1990, RESNA (formerly WaterWork Corporation) drilled, logged, and
sampled soil borings and installed a groundwater monitoring well around the former tank
locations as shown on Figure 2 The monitoring well was installed in the approximate center
of the former tank pit One soil boring (SBI) was drilled to 65 feet to determine if the zone Just
' above the water table had been affected by any hydrocarbon contamination Three soil borings
' (SB2, SB3 & SB4) were drilled to 30 feet, and the fifth soil boring was drilled to 80 feet below
grade and subsequently completed as a groundwater monitoring well (MW1)
' Laboratory analysis of the soils directly beneath the previous tank pit indicated high levels of
' gasoline hydrocarbons at depths between 10 and 20 feet The concentrations of gasoline
hydrocarbons dropped off significantly with depth due to the low permeability of the soils
' Monitoring well MW 1 and soil boring SB2 samples contained significant amounts of
hydrocarbon constituents Soil samples collected from soil borings SB1, SB3 and SB4 contained
' trace to very low concentrations of gasoline range analytes Soil contamination is assumed to
extend beneath the mausoleum adjacent to the former tanks locations In the analysis of the
initial groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW I elevated levels of petroleum
hydrocarbon analytes were detected
On February 21, 1991 and again on April 18, 1991 confirmation groundwater samples were
tcollected for analysis from the monitoring well The samples were analyzed for BTEX and
TPHG by EPA methods 8020/8015 Laboratory data sheets for the 1991 sampling and analysis
' are included in Appendix 11
' Benzene was detected at 0 6 parts per billion (ppb) in the February 21, 1991 sample No other
petroleum hydrocarbon analytes were detected above method reporting limits
The April 18, 1991 sample was split and analyzed by both Sequoia and Applied Analytical
' Laboratories Benzene was again detected at 7 1 ppb (Sequoia) and 3 9 ppb (Applied) in the
sample and no other petroleum hydrocarbon analytes were detected above method reporting
limits
' R-021492 LF 3
