The investigation did reveal that MTBE contamination has I
migrated off site in both the soil and groundwater. The soil sample from 20 feet below surface
grade(bsg)from Geoprobe GP2 evidenced soil contamination, None of the other Geoprobe soil
samples from 20 feet bsg were analyzed. The 15 feet bsg soil samples from Geoprobes GP2,
GP6,GP7 and GP9-all evidenced /MTBE contamination,so the contamination spread laterally at
this depth, but how far it spread at this depth and how much deeper it spread laterally must be
determined.
Table 1 of the report indicates that Geoprobe GP9 sail sample at 8 feet bsg was not analyzed but
lab analytical data was included that showed MTBE at .0083 mg/kg. Please correct the i
information in the table. In addition, quality assurance/quality control information for the lab data
was not included in the report. Please submit the corrected table and lab data to PHS/EHD.
Since MTBE contamination has migrated off site the feasibility of groundwater extraction to stop
( further migration and as a remedial alternative should be investigated. Shallow screened
monitoring wells should be installed off site to confirm the Geoprobe groundwater samples. Soil
and groundwater below 20 feet must be investigated. Deeper screened monitoring wells will have
to be installed. Submit a work plan to further investigate the lateral and vertical extent of MTBE
contamination and evaluate the feasibility of groundwater extraction by July 16,2001.
If you have any questions contact me at (209)468-3449.
Margaret Lagorio, Supervising REHS
Unit IV
Donna Zan, REHS, Director
Environmental Health
c: CVRWQCB-Marty Hartzell
Avalon Environmental -Trevor Santochi
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
