Ms Margaret Lagorno, SJCPHS September 28,2004
Dual Phase Extraction Test Report
Joe's Truck Plaza,Lathrop,California
Page 5
test procedures adopted were generally consistent with activities outlined in Stratus'
October 21, 2003, Work Plan for Additional Assessment A site-specific safety plan was
developed and discussed during the field activity Adequate measures were taken to
protect personnel and equipment during the testing activity
Test Well Description
Well MW-7 was constructed in May 2004, to a total depth of 19 feet bgs using a 4-inch
diameter well casing The well screen consisted of 15 feet of 0 02-inch diameter factory
slotted casing, installed from approximately 4 to 19 feet bgs This well was designed to
allow both soil vapor and groundwater to be extracted from the vadose, smear, and
saturated zones
DPE Test Equipment
A Solleco thermal oxidizer, rated at 400 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) with a
25-horse power (hp) liquid-nng pump, was used to apply vacuum and extract soil vapors
and groundwater from well MW-7 The trailer-mounted system also housed a 100-gallon
water/condensate knockout tank and a 2 hp liquid discharge pump to drain the knockout
tank A propane generator rated at 49 kilowatts was used to power the DPE unit Liquid
propane was used as supplemental fuel to maintain combustion temperatures in the
thermal oxidizer The DPE equipment, generator, Baker tank, test well, observation
wells, and other testing equipment were cordoned-off with delineators, barricades, and
caution tape The DPE unit, generator, and other equipment were housed within a
temporary fence enclosure, identified in Figure 2
The wellhead of extraction well MW-7 was temporarily modified to provide a seal for
vacuum conditions and to facilitate insertion of a drop-tube (1 5-inch diameter) to extract
soil vapors and groundwater
The liquid ring pump was used to extract groundwater and soil vapors from extraction
well MW-7 The extracted groundwater and soil vapor (dual phase flow) were directed
to a knock out tank The separated vapors from the knockout tank were directed to the
thermal oxidizer for abatement before discharging to the atmosphere The groundwater
was transferred from the knock out tank to a 21,000-gallon holding tank using the 2 hp
transfer pump on the unit Groundwater from the holding tank was transported and
disposed of at McKittrick Waste Disposal Facility (MKWDF) in McKittnck, California,
by Intergrated Wastestream Management, Inc (IWM) A total of 19,100 gallons of
extracted groundwater, which includes approximately 300 gallons holding tank rinsate
water, was disposed of at MKWDF Copies of the certificates of disposal are included in
Appendix A
•
P Voe s Truck Plaza\Reports\DPE TestUoes Truck DPE Test Report doc 5 rRA 7u5
