Figure 1 shows the site location.
Figure 2 is a site plan. The work was performed to remove hydrocarbon-affected soil that had been
wrapped in visqueen and stockpile&in the tank cavity after the waste oil tank was removed in
December 1996.
BACKGROUND
In December 1996 HK2 removed one 550-gallon underground waste oil storage tank(UST) from
the site under the supervision of Mr.. Jerry Yoshioka of the SJCPHS. The concentration of total
petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline and diesel (TPH-G and TPH-D), benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and total xylenes(BTEX), total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons-(TEPH), and semi-
volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) was less than the laboratory reporting limit in the soil sample
collected from the bottom of the excavation (approximately 9 feet below grade [fbg]). The total
concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was 0.041 mg/kg. The composite sample
collected from excavated soil stockpiled onsite contained 71 mg/kg TPH-G, 1,100 mg/kg TPH-D,
10,000 mg/kg TEPH, and 0.071 mg/kg benzene. Details are in the Waste Oil Tank Removal Report
submitted to Mr. Yoshioka on February 14, 1997.
Following sample collection,HK2 backfilled the excavation with gavel up to approximately 6.5 fbg,
lined the excavation with visqueen, placed the stockpiled soil in the excavation, folded the visqueen
over the top of the buried stockpiled, and backfilled the remainder of the excavation (approximately
0 to 1.5 fbg)with Class H base material. The soil stockpile was placed in the excavation so the use
of the site would not be limited during soil profiling activities.
