In July 1988 , a Preliminary Report detailing the tank removal
sampling program and outlining the recommended scope of work
necessary to develop a problem assessment report was prepared.
The scope of work specified the installation of three soil
borings and three monitoring wells for the collection of both
soil and groundwater samples. In May 1989, the activities de-
tailed within the scope of work were implemented.
3 . 0 Field Activities
The problem assessment field activities are summarized by the
following. A complete description of the field activities is
contained in Appendix A.
During the time period from May 81 1989 through May 11, 1989,
three soil boreholes and three monitoring wells were installed at
the site (Figure 3) . From these installations, a total of twelve
soil samples and three groundwater samples were collected. The
soil and water samples collected analyzed for the following
parameters:
o Benzene, Toluene, Xylene & Ethylbenzene (BTX&E) - EPA Method
8020 (soils) Method 602 (water) .
o Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) (Heavy fraction) - EPA
modified Method 8015.
4 . 0 Analytical Results
The complete analytical results for all samples collected are
contained an Appendix B. The following sections summarize the
analytical results of the soil and groundwater samples.
4 . 1 Soil Samples
A total of three boreholes were drilled at the site. The depth
of each borehole is specified in the field report. From each
borehole, soil samples were collected a 3 ' intervals and field
screened using a HNu Photoionizer. The soil sampling effort is
described in more detail in the Field Sampling Report contained
in Appendix A. Specific samples were selected for analysis based
on the field screening measurements of the soil samples collected
from the depths specified in the scope of work. At a maximum,
three soil samples were collected from each borehole. Each
sample identification number includes location number and depth
(i.e. BH2-12 = Sample from borehole #2 at a 12 ' depth) . Soil
samples were also collected prior to each well installation from
the unsaturated zone lying directly above the groundwater table.
An exception to this protocol was experienced during the soil
sampling at the MW--3 location. A soil sample collected from
monitor well MW-3 was obtained from a depth of 6 ' beneath the
ground surface (BGS) . It was collected at this depth due to a
perched water zone which was encountered at a depth of 9 ' BGS.
4 -
