BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The objective of this phase of the project is to install three (3) monitoring wells, one (1) of
which will be installed in a deep exploratory boring. The work will be performed at a facility
in Ripon, California, approximately seven miles north of Modesto, California. The site is
located in the Central Valley and the stratigraphy consists of unconsolidated clay, silt, sand,
and minor gravel. The ground water in the are is unconfined, with the water table located at
approximately 40 feet.
The wells will be located to the south of the Nestle facility near the City of Ripon sewage
treatment area. All drill sites are easily accessible from city, county, or facility roads.
As part of this drilling effort, one (1) exploratory boring will be drilled with mud rotary to a
depth of 240 feet. The boring will be electric logged (E-logged) following drilling. The boring
will then be completed as a well to a depth of approximately 240 feet. The well will be
completed with five inch PVC screen and casing. The screen will be 20 feet in length. The
work will also include the installation of two additional monitoring wells, one monitoring well
to an approximate depth of 120 feet, and one monitoring well to an approximate depth of 160
feet.
Trichloroethene (TCE) and associated degradation products, including vinyl chloride, have
been detected in the ground water in and around the facility. The area in which the three
wells will be drilled is expected to have low concentrations of TCE and associated chemicals
(below the Federal drinking water standard).
Additional information is provided in the technical specification. Also, the cost proposal for
conducting the work is provided as an attachment.
20598/091592.Rpt
-1-
