The
report transmitted results of additional soil sampling in the vicinity of tank TK-2. Prior to
sampling, this area was excavated to an average depth of five feet below the ground surface
(bgs). Six floor samples and three sidewall samples were taken to confirm that all
contaminated soils have been removed. All confirmation sample results show nondetectable
levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes (BTEX), and total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel, kerosene, and motor oil. The report also requested closure of
investigation at the facility.
The 16 June and 20 September 1994 reports stated that the site is underlain by a sandy, silty,
clayey gravel to a depth of two feet, clayey-silty sand from 2.5 to six feet, sandy-silty clay
from six to eight feet, and fine-grained sand from eight to 10 feet; ground water was not
encountered during the excavation but is found at about 25 feet bgs; the site is.approximately
3,000 feet west of the Stanislaus River; contaminated soils were excavated to an average
depth of five feet bgs and 12 bgs in one location; TPH as diesel was not detected in the
confirmation samples; monitoring and extraction wells, which have been installed in
conjunction with the trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination, have not been tested for fuel
constituents; an onsite soil gas survey performed in 1989 also in conjunction with the TCE
contamination showed nondetectable BTEX; approximately 750 tons of contaminated soils
were excavated and disposed of at REMCO, Inc. in Richmond, California; and the
excavation was backfilled with clean soil and compacted.
Based on the information provided, Board staff has determined that appropriate response
actions have been completed, that acceptable remedial practices were implemented and at this
time, no further investigation, remedial or removal action or monitoring is required at the
aboveground storage tank area at the Nestle Beverage Company in Ripon, San Joaquin
County.
