Nestle USA, Inc., Ripon, California August 11, 2009
Second Quarter 2009 Site Status Report
in M-1 B (590 pg/I, 2005 and 2007). Nestle will continue to evaluate the COC
data for this well as additional data are collected.
No changes to the COC distribution in the Intermediate or Lower aquifers were
observed.
4.3 ON-SITE EXTRACTION AND TREATMENT SYSTEM AND IRAP
Groundwater extraction continued throughout the Second Quarter 2009 at the On-Site
extraction and treatment system. The following is a summary of the On-Site extraction
and treatment system performance data and a discussion of the performance
monitoring. The extraction and treatment system was upgraded in February 2008
consistent with the approved Interim Remedial Action Plan (IRAP)5. This system utilizes
an activated carbon treatment system to treat groundwater extracted from wells EU-3
and EU-4. Following the startup of these new IRAP wells on February 14, 2008,
extraction from wells EW-1 and EI-1 ceased.
ECM collected groundwater monitoring data and assessed the extraction and treatment
system operation on an on-going basis. Operational changes were made based on
these assessments when needed. The following is a summary of the extraction and
treatment system field and laboratory data and assessments that were made to optimize
the system performance during the Second Quarter of 2009.
oo At the On-Site extraction and treatment system, data from extraction wells EU-3
and EU-4 and nearby monitoring wells (M-113, M-46A, M-47A, M-48A, and M-
49A) have been assessed. Since the system startup in February 2008,
concentrations of TCE have decreased from 450 pg/I to 39 pg/I at EU-3, and
from 1,200 pg/I to 25 pg/I at EU-4 (Figure 15).
oo A decline in the concentrations of TCE has been observed at the nearby
monitoring wells (M-1A and M-47A) since the treatment system startup (see
Table 3.1). ECM will continue to sample these wells quarterly and assess the
monitoring data to evaluate system performance.
oo The On-Site extraction and treatment system extracted approximately 7.67
million gallons of water and removed 3.29 pounds of COCs from groundwater
during the Second Quarter of 2009. This is equivalent to the removal of 0.43
pounds of COCs per million gallons of water pumped and treated.
oo TCE mass removal rates for the combined influent from EU-3 and EU-4 have
been estimated as high as 0.23 lbs/day (in April 2008), and has more recently
averaged 0.04 lbs/day during the Second Quarter(April through June) of 2009.
oo Nestle has proposed the installation of two additional monitoring wells at the Site
to evaluate the capture zones of the IRAP wells EU-3 and EU-4 to the east and
to the west where no other monitoring wells are currently located6.
5 Environmental Cost Management, Inc., Interim Remedial Action Plan for 230 Industrial Avenue,
Former Nestl6 USA, Inc.
