KLEINFELDER
Task 2 - Drilling and Sampling of 10 to 14 Borings
Kleinfelder proposes to drill six borings in the immediate location of the three former fuel oil
storage tanks. Three borings will be beneath the locations where the underground piping
entered the tanks. The remaining three borings will be located along the length of the tanks
where surface staining could indicate possible fuel oil. Remaining borings (4 to 8) will be
located radially outward from the tank locations using PID readings and visual evidence for the
tank locations using PID readings and visual evidence for the boring locations (Plate 3). The
borings will be drilled to a depth of approximately 25 to 30 feet below ground surface. Based
on nearby monitoring wells, it is anticipated that groundwater is approximately 36 to 40 feet
below ground surface and will not be encountered while drilling. The borings will be
terminated if groundwater is encountered at a depth less than 30 feet.
Soil borings will be advanced using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 6-inch hollow
stem augers. The borings will be drilled, logged, and sampled following the protocol
described in Attachment A, Sections A-2.1 through A-2.4, and closed as described in
Section A-2.7.
Task 3 - Laboratory Analysis
Two soil samples from each boring will be selected for laboratory analysis (20 to 28 total).
The samples will be selected based on field observations, qualitative screening results with an
organic vapor analyzer, and the objectives of the investigation. The 20 to 28 soil samples will
be submitted to a laboratory certified by the EPA/State of California Department of Toxic
Substances Control (DTSC) for the proposed analyses. The upper sample from each boring
will be analyzed for:
► Extractable Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH)
Purgeable TPH
► Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes (BTEX)
The bottom sample of each boring will be analyzed for extractable TPH only.
The samples will be analyzed on a regular turnaround schedule, usually requiring five working
days for completion. If water is encountered in one or more of the borings, Kleinfelder can
collect representative water samples from the borings with a BAT Probe or by bailing without
installing groundwater monitoring wells.
Task 4 - Prepare a Report of Findings
Upon completion of soil sampling and receipt and review of analytical results, a report of
findings will be prepared for client review. The report will include:
. A description of field activities, observations, and protocols.
► Lithologic logs.
Tabulated results of soil sample analysis with copies of certified analytical laboratory
results.
Description and documentation of QA/QC procedures employed for field and
laboratory work.
Upon review and approval by San Joaquin County, the reports will be submitted to SJCEHD.
24-YP2512/JA5-273(1993) Page 2 of 4 September 10, 1993
Copyright 1993 KLeinfelder, Inc.
