EEC S146201 UniFirst Stockton September 24.2004
California Laboratory Services (CLS) under proper Cham-of-Custody documentation Surface
samples were collected from the areas that appeared to be the most heavily impacted based on
PID readings Each of the six samples collected were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon
(TPH) full range scan by United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8015
and Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) by EPA Method 8260
' 31.1 Soil Sampling Results
TPH and VOC constituents were detected in the samples submitted for analysis Laboratory
results are summarized on Table 1 and described below A complete copy of the laboratory data
sheets is included in Appendix B
1 Results of the surface sampling indicated the following
• TAH as gasoline was detected at concentrations ranging from 2 0 parts per million (ppm)
' to 2,800 ppm,
0 TPH as motor oil was detected at concentrations ranging from non detect (<1 0 ppm) to
140 ppm,
1 • TPH as mineral oil was detected in one sample(SS-5) at a concentration of 34 ppm,
a Gasoline and solvent constituents (ethyelbenzene, tetrachloroethene, xylenes,
i sopropy I benzene, n-propylnezene, trichloroethene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, toluene, and
1,3,5-tri methyl benzene) were detected in all six surface samples collected The highest
i concentration was 680,000 parts per billion (ppb)of xylene detected in SS-5
Based on the results of this sampling, EEC recommended to Unil~irst that additional investigation
' be conducted to delineate the extent of impacted soil at the site prior to restarting construction
activities and resurfacing the site
3 2 Geoprobe Subsurface Investigation
On November 11, 2003, to facilitate the lateral and vertical assessment of impacted soil at the
southwest corner of the facility, a subsurface investigation was conducted This investigation
consisted of advancing nine geoprobe borings to 25 feet below ground surface (bgs) The
investigation included obtaining drilling permits from the SJCEHD, conducting utility clearance,
drilling the borings, and collecting soil samples for laboratory analysis These tasks are
described in more detail below
3 2.1 San Joaquin County Permits
EEC obtained a drilling permit to advance geoprobe push borings at the subject site from
SJCEHD A copy of this permit is included in Appendix C
' 3 2 2 Utility Clearance
In compliance with California Government Code Sections 4216-4216 9, all borehole locations
were marked with white paint and Underground Service Alert (USA) was notified more than 48
hours prior to drilling Ticket number 412402 was used throughout the course of this assessment
4
