Much of the land at DVI is used for inmate housing, and most of the remaining land supports
facility operations. DVI's former burn pit is northeast of the inmate housing facility. The former bum
pit location is variably covered with asphalt, grass, and soil. The land use activity surrounding DVI is
primarily agricultural. A Union Pacific Railroad track runs along the northwest boundary of the DVI
property.
In October 1985, water samples were collected from the agricultural drainage ditch downstream of the
DVI stormwater discharge. Elevated levels of chlorinated solvents were detected in the water samples
collected, particularly tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE). Additional sampling and
analysis of the site was conducted in 1986 to identify the source of the impacts. The test results
concluded that introduction of chlorinated solvents into the stormwater drainage system was occurring
in the northern stormwater drainage subsystem. Further soil and groundwater sampling confirmed the
' bum pit as the source area of the chlorinated solvents.
URS Corporation
' Crown Corporate Center
2870 Gateway Oaks Drive,Suite 150
Sacramento,CA 95833
Tel:(916)679-2000
Fax:(916)679-2900
