If equipped, the parking brake on self-propelled mobile equipment will be capable of holding the equipment under typical load condition on the maximum travel grade. All braking systems installed on self-propelled mobile equipment will be maintained in a functional condition. Front-end loaders and bulldozers should have protection from falling objects. The equipment operator will ensure there is sufficient overhead clearance (i.e., no part of the equipment will hit or touch any overhead obstruction when raised nor will it hit or touch any object while being raised) before raising any part of the equipment through careful preplanning. 6.5 Trenching and Excavation Excavation activities are anticipated. All operations involving excavation or trenching will be performed in accordance with Cal/OSHA Regulations for excavations (T8 CCR 1539 —1541.1). An excavation is considered to be any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in an earth surface, formed by earth removal. No personnel will be allowed to enter an unshored or unsloped excavation that is deeper than 5 I feet. Personnel must obtain approval from the Project Health and Safety Officer before entering any excavation. All excavation activities must be performed at a minimum under the direction of a competent person. Underground Utilides The estimated location of utility installations, such as sewer, fuel, gas, phone cable, communication cable, N cable, electrical, potable/sanitary water, or any other underground installations that reasonably may be expected to be encountered during excavation work, shall be determined prior to opening an excavation.
