PUBL?C HEALTH SER ICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY t'
JOG[KHANNA M.D.,M.P.H.
Healrh Officer P
P.O. Box 2009 • (1601 East Hazelton Avenue) • Stockton,Caftmia 95201
(209) 468-3400
tJ
{ STEVE KEETER
{ SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY CAPITOL PROJECTS
222 EAST WEBER ROOM 678 MAY 14 1992
STOCKTON CA 95202
RE: 500 Hospital Road SITE CODE: 1614
French Camp, CA
i
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD)
has reviewed the "Soil Assessment Report" dated December 6, 1992, submitted by
i
Kleinfelder and has the following comments.
1 San Joaquin County Flood Control Maps (Spring 1986) record the seasonal high
groundwater for this site at approximately 10 to 15 feet below ground surface (BGS).
The sail sample results from the borings underneath the two 750 gallon underground
storage tanks (T2, T3) show soil contamination at 15 and 18 feet BGS. Due to the
proximity of the contamination to the seasonal high groundwater, a groundwater
investigation for this site is warranted. A minimum of three monitoring wells will need to
be installed in order to determine the groundwater gradient direction for this site.
F Additional soil borings/monitoring wells may need to be drilled to determined the full
extent of the soil and/or groundwater contaminant plume(s).
E
It is understood that the work at this site is on hold pending the demolition of the
structures over the tanks and the destruction of the domestic well located nearby,
1 allowing for easier access to remove the tanks and to conduct an investigation.
Domestic wells located on or near a contaminated site need to be destroyed in such a
a way as to prevent the vertical migration of contamination. The method used to destroy
i the well should be dependent on the original construction specifications, if known, and
the current condition of the well: The well may be video taped to determine if the casing
' has deteriorated which would have allowed contamination to enter the casing and move
I vertically down to a deeper aquifer. The well should be sounded for total depth and the
static water level should be measured. A water sample should be obtained from the well
and analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel and gasoline, benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylene. The information gathered from the construction details, the
well measurements and the analytical results of the sampling should should be used to
determine the well destruction specifications.
A Division of San Joaquin Counry Hcakh Care Serdices
