KLEINFELDER
1
7 CONCLUSIONS AND RECONE"ENDATIONS
Three underground fuel storage tanks (TI, T2, and T3) were excavated and removed from the
San Joaquin County General Hospital site in French Camp Kleinfelder was retained by San
Joaquin County to assess the soil at the two tank sites and assess the groundwater at the T2/T3
site
Results of the initial soil investigation were presented in Kleinfelder's Soil Assessment Report
dated December 6, 1991. Kleinfelder did not recommend additional soil assessment or
remediation at the T1 site Analytical results of the initial soil investigation indicated that
additional soil assessment and remediation were required at the T2/T3 site
Kleinfelder drilled and sampled p ed seven soil borings around the T2/T3 site The estimated
lateral and vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbon migration in the soil and area to be
remediated was estimated based on the results of the seven soil borings Approximately 1,000
cubic yards of non-impacted soil and 2,400 yards of impacted soil were excavated to a depth
of 34 feet. Ten confirmation samples indicated that the petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated
soil had been excavated and removed. The T2/T3 excavation was backfilled by San Joaquin
County
' The excavated soil piles were assessed, and a permit received from the San Joaquin Valley
Unified Air Pollution Control District to conduct on-site soil aeration The soil was spread
near the back of the hospital site in a 1 foot thick layer. After approximately one month of
aeration, Kleinfelder collected 24 soil samples along six rows TPH concentrations were not
detected in two discrete samples with the highest organic vapor readings, and TPH
' concentrations were detected, lust above laboratory reporting limits in two of the six composite
samples from the aeration pile
i
Three ground water monitoring wells were installed around the T2/T3 site Petroleum
hydrocarbons were not detected in two rounds of groundwater sampling conducted at the site
Results of the monitoring well sampling indicated that the petroleum hydrocarbons associated
with the fuel tanks had not impacted the groundwater San Joaquin County Public Health
Services allowed the three monitoring wells to be abandoned
24-220152-DOo/FR 12-105 (1993) Page 16 of 18 July 27, 1993
' Copyright 1993 Kteinfelder, Inc.
