detect most partially-oxygenated hydrocarbons (e.g. , ketones ) ,
chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g. , trichloroethylene ) , and nitrogen-
containing compounds, but the response to these ranges between
poor and good. It generally cannot readily detect water or fully
oxygenated compounds (e.g. , carbon dioxide ) .
2 . 2 SVCA RESULTS
The results of the investigation (Appendix B ) are summarized in
Table 1 . No aromatics were found at levels above detection ( 1
ppm) , and the low levels ( 2-6 .ppm) of volatile hydrocarbons
detected consisted entirely of low-molecular-weight, low-boiling-
point hydrocarbon( s ) . These small hydrocarbons do not appear to
be concentrated in a particular area of the site. To determine
the relative molecular weights of the early-eluting components,
methane standards (Table 2 ) were run on the gas chromatograph
(GC ) . The absence of a significant level of methane in any of
the samples suggests that active anaerobic biodegradation is not
occurring at the site. Comparing these results with those of
another study (Appendix C ) , the component of interest appears in
the chromatogram at the same retention time as butane. Although
the resolving capacity for hydrocarbon constituents of the HNU
421 GC is quite high, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry would
be required to identify the component( s ) positively.
c40/90265 7
