LATV OF TRACK
April 7, 1988
County Health Department
1601 E. Hazelton Street
Stockton, CA95201
Attention: Dave Karls
Dear Mr. Karls;
The City of Tracy is currently in the construction phase of
a new water distribution pipeline system to serve our
expanding needs.
On Friday, April 1, 1988 pipeline installation was
interrupted by contaminated soil within the Southern Pacific
Railroad property at the intersection of the Southern
Pacific Railroad and Corral Hollow Road. A Southern Pacific
Pipe Lines, Inc. carrier pipe is in the immediate vicinity
of the contamination. It has also been reported that a
carrier pipe owned by Associated Oil Company ran through
this corridor, but was removed about ten years ago.
The contamination was discovered while installing a steel
casing underneath the railroad by boring and jacking. The
boring and jacking machine was operating in a pit on the
north side of the railroad where there was no evidence of
contamination. Auger returns near the end of the planned
bore contained visible contaminants. At this point the
Contractor was stopped and sent to another part of the
project.
The City of Tracy retained Terrestrial Technology, Inc. to
carry out a soil testing program along the proposed
alignment of the water pipeline south of the railroad right
of way to determine the extent of contamination. Soil
samples were taken at the proposed water pipeline depth.
We now know the limits of the contamination along the water
pipeline. We have also performed testing in the bore pit
where contaminated auger returns from the boring operation
are stockpiled.
n
Telephone(209)836-9193 520 Tracy Boulevard Tracy, California 95376
