The plan was prepared in accordance with Provision F.4 of Waste
Discharge Requirements (WDRs) No. 5-00-057. After reviewing the workplan, I have the following
comments:
• Monitoring Wells MW-1 and MW-2 are located adjacent to the South San Joaquin Irrigation
Canal and may be influenced by irrigation water quality and localized groundwater mounding.
The wells should be located far enough away from the canal to provide data representative of
local groundwater conditions.
• The Workplan states that the wells will be drilled by the mud rotary method; however, your
consultant recently informed me that you now plan to use the hollow stem auger method. This
change is acceptable.
• A five-foot length of bentonite transition seal is excessive and difficult to hydrate; a two-foot
thick transition seal is adequate for shallow groundwater monitoring wells.
• Number 30 sand is specified as the filter pack material. Number 3 sand is commonly used with
0.020-inch slot size.
• The percentage of bentonite in the bentonite/cement slurry well grout is not stated. Please limit
the bentonite percentage to a maximum value of six-percent by weight to prevent excessive
shrinkage of the cement mix. Alternatively, use no bentonite in the neat cement.
• Consider using two-inch inside diameter wells, as less development is required to consolidate
and remove fines from the filter pack. Surging the well casing after installing the sand pack but
prior to installation of the transition seal is also recommended.
California Environmental Protection:Agency
C51 Recycled Paper
