Overexposure to these compounds can cause
4 headache, dizziness, nausea, and eye, nose and throat irritation. Benzene is a known carcinogen.
Permissible exposure limits (PELs) for BTEX compounds are 1, 50, 100, and 100 parts per
million (ppm), respectively. PELs listed are based on an 8-hour time weighted average for
► exposure to airborne compounds. The primary route of exposure for diesel and BTEX
compounds is inhalation.
FIRST AID:
. Inhalation -At first signs of headache or dizziness, remove victim from work area and give
fresh air. If breathing has stopped, administer artificial respiration. Get medical attention
immediately.
t
Skin and Eve Contact - Flush eyes immediately with water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally
lifting the eyelids. Remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected body areas with large
amounts of soap and water.
