Representing EHD
were Margaret Lagorio,Nuel C.Henderson,a,nd Jeff Wong. Representing CVRWQCB were Cori Condon and James L
Barton. The following is a summary of the meeting.
SMITH CANAL PUMP STA'T'ION
CVRWQCB agreed with EI-ID that after five quarters of sampling since the installation of the northernmost down gradient
monitoring well MW7 in February 2002,the site is a candidate for"no further action' status. Currently else only well with
detectable level of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbon as diesel is MW-4,and samples from all other iniroeitsg wells have
been non-detect for the last three consecutive quarters. The three diraenaional extent of the conmmination in both soil and
groundwater has been defined The plume appears to be stable and retracting, and detectable level has continued to
decrease in concentration. EHD will be submitting an official request letter for concurrence for closure status to
CVRWQCB.
VAN BUSSIRK GOLF COURSE
CVRWQCB does not agree that the site is eligible for closure consideration at this time. Methyl tert butyl ether(MTBE)
has been detected in the deep well MW-9 screened from 70 feet to 75 feet at concentrations 58 and 66µg/l dumsg the third
and fourth quarters of 2003,respectively, 'rhe vertical extent of the contamination is not defused. The California
Department of Health has established a Primary Maximum Contaminant Level(MCL)in drinking water for MTBE at 13
parts per billion(ppb). Additional work is required to define the vertical and lateral extent of the MTBE plume.
AGE calculated in FirstQ Rrperi .740142teed April 25,2001 a mass of-77 grams of dissolved MTBE left remaining at
the site. The number was based on a 30-foot thick ellipsoidal volume using an average MTBE concentration numberof 100
µg/1 from, analytical results of MW3,MW-4,and MW-6 groundwater samples. This calculation is invalid because the
volume of the MTBE plume appears to be substantially larger since the installation of MW-9. The contamination mass
should be recalculated after the extent of the plume has been defined.
CVRWQCB recommended evaluating the cost-versus-effectivenmof a limited groundwater extraction from MW-4,
consistently the most contaminated well,to control the MTBE plume from migrating further downgmdient(north)-or
downward. Regardless whether a remediation is required at the ub_,the extent of the MTBE plume must be defined by
additional investigation and a 2400-foot receptor survey should be performed.
Donna 14=u,.REHS,Director
En ' 7o.&PSHen(='
eathJeffrry RENS Nuel C.Henderson,Jr.,RG
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV LOP/Site Mitigation Unit Tit
C WQCB—James L L Barton,RG l
V GE-Bill Little
ATC Wtii 'ern Shipp
