1
Volume and Mass Calculation of Dissolved MTBE
iVAN BUSKIRK GOLF COURSE FACILITY
' 1740 Houston Avenue, Stockton, California
Assumptions:
• The distribution of dissolved MTBE concentrations on the site can be approximated by an elliptical
column, with an average concentration of MTBE (See Figure 2);
_ • The effective porosity of soil at the site is 35% (probably overestimated); and
• Data collected from the grab ground water sampling in February and 08 March 2002 March 2001
April 2003 ground water sampling event and the grab ground water sampling July 2003 are
t representative of existing site conditions.
I
' The area of an ellipse column can be calculated by the formula:
At.= nab, where a is the long radius of the ellipse and b is the short radius.
For the estimated ellipse, a= 100 ft,b=35 ft, and thickness c = 70 ft
The average MTBE concentration for the ellipse column is estimated to be 85 micrograms per liter(Lg/l)
' These concentrations are equivalent to 0.00000085 g/ml. As a ml is very nearly equivalent to a cubic
centimeter of water, which by definition equals one gram.,these concentrations are nearly unitless numbers
relative to mass calculations.
' The area of the ellipse column is given by:
' Ae= ?Lab = 7C(100 ft)(35 ft) = 10,990 ft2
The volume of the ellipse column is given by:
' Ve=A,,Hieght= 10,990 ftz x 70 ft =769,300 ft'
Water occupies the porosity in the soil, which is estimated to be 35%of the soil volume,so the total volume
i of water in the saturated portion of the ellipse column is approximated by:
i
' Ve= (.35)(769,300 ft') =269,255 ft'
One cubic foot of water contains 7.48 gallons,so the volume of the water in the ellipse column is given by:
' Ve=(269,255 ft3)(7.48 gal/ft')=2,014,027 gallons
One gallon of water equals 3.785 liter of water, so the volume of the water expressed as liters in the ellipse
' is given by:
Ve ( 2,014,027 gallons) (3.785 liter/gallon) = 7,623,092 liter of water
1
' Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
1
