Previous soil sample collection analyses have indicated that some petroleum
contamination was detected at 20', 30', and 40' bgs. PHS-EHD is unclear on the pattern
this data suggests and would like your consultant's interpretation of the soil plume in future
reports of the subsurface conditions.
Groundwater samples from the three monitoring wells have verified that petroleum
constituents are present in the groundwater and appear to be delineated in all quadrants but
the northwest. Additional investigation will be required at the site to verify the lateral extent
of the groundwater plume. A workplan to collect soil and groundwater samples in this area,
and other areas not currently supporting conclusions reached by your consultant, should be
submitted to PHS-EHD.
For clarification in,the future, please have your consultant include a groundwater iso-
concentration map for Benzene and one for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline
(TPH-G). An iso-concentration map constructed by PHS-EHD for TPH-G indicates that the
pattern is consistent with normal dispersion of contaminants from an underground storage
tank (UST) pit. An iso-concentration map for Benzene in the groundwater is not consistent.
The groundwater sample collected from soil boring B-3 (up-gradient of the former UST pit)
detected higher concentrations of Benzene than boring P5-W which is located in the UST
pit. Please have your consultant provide a professional discussion if this pattern re-occurs
during the required continued investigation.
Please continue to monitor and sample the onsite monitoring wells and submit the report on
a quarterly basis. Quarterly Monitoring Reports should include conclusions and
recommendations and should be submitted to PHS-EHD prior to the next quarter's sampling
event. Appointments should be made with Mr. Infurna with at least 48 working hours notice.
A Division of San Joaquin Counry Health Carc Services
