s V Mr. Kyle Christie 2 27 March 1989 2. Ve request -that soil samples be collected for laboratory analysis every 5-foot interval rather than every 101foot interval as proposed in the work plan. A soil sample is to be collected, using a 1 .5 foot-long split-spoon sampler, after each 5-foot-long continuous core sample has been collected. 3. Take portable vapor meter readings on the continuous core samples soon after they have been retrieved from the borehole and report the readings in the SRP. The information could be very useful when developing a soil remediation plan. 4. Provide trigometric calculated depths for each sample collected from the two slant borings. The drilling angles are to be reported and cross- sections are to be completed for both slant borings and included in the SRP. The crosssecti-ons -are-to -shop +heel-4.ca+ or,of the,-borehole,-sample:- points, he,_borehole,,—sample-points, dispenser islands and product pipelines, as well as the lithology and extent of contamination. Results of the soil characterization work are to . be presented in a SRP as outlined in Appendix A of the Tri-Regional Guidelines (enclosed) . The SRP is to be completed and submitted to us and the SJLHD by 26 May 1989. The' contaminated soil is a continuing source of hydrocarbons to the ground water and remedial action at this site should begin by eliminating this source. Include in the SRP a time table for the implementation of the proposed remediation plan. Soil remediation is ;to be initiated no -later than 30 June 1.989. INSTALLATION OF OFF-SITE GROUND WATER MONITORING WELLS The proposed work for the installation of four additional monitoring wells is acceptable to us, but it may be necessary oto install additional wells to fully define the extent of the plume. All necessary permits to conduct the work are to be obtained from the appropriate local agencies. We have the following comments and recommendations regarding the proposed work: 1. We suggest that another monitoring well be installed, in addition .to the - four-propo-s-ed,. to•define -the southeasItern.extent of-the-plume. _ A possj.blr location for this well would be on the southeastern corner of the Kettleman " Lane-Hutchins Street intersection at the Shell Station or nearby. 2. Soil samples collected from the boreholes for the off-site monitoring wells are to be screened in the field using a portable vapor meter for possible selection for laboratory analysis. I If no hydrocarbons are detected in field screening or visual inspection, the unsaturated soil sample collected nearest the ground water surface is to be submitted to the laboratory for BTX&E- and TPH analysis. If at the conclusion of this work the ground water plume has not been completely defined ("zero line") , additional investigative work will be required and a work plan for the work is to be submitted to us and the SJLHD within two weeks of receiving the laboratory results for this proposed work.
