II 25
.i
I
h
QUALITY ASSURANCE PLAN
it
The procedures of, the quality assurance plan for sample collection, identification,
handling, and analysis are described below.
i
Sample Collection and Handling
Proper collection and handling are essential to ensure the quality of the sample. All
samples will be collected by experienced field personnel using suitable containers which
have been precleaned at the laboratory. The containers will be clearly marked and dated
for identification. All samples will be cooled and stored for analysis no longer II than the
maximum allowable holding time. H
ii
Sample Identification and Chain-of-Custody Proce ures i!
These procedures ensure sample integrity and document sample possession from the
time of collection to its ultimate disposal. Each sample container submitted for11 analysis
will have a label affixed to identify the job number, sampler, date of sample collection,
and a sample number unique to that sample. This information, in addition to a description
field of the sample, measurements, sampling methodology, names of sampling personnel,
and any other pertinent field observations, will be recorded on the borehole log or in the
i
field records.
A chain-of-custody card (Figure 12) will be used to document possession of the
sample from time of collection to its arrival at the laboratory. The sample control officer
at the laboratory will verify sample integrity and co firm that it was collected in the proper
container, preserved correctly, and that there is an adequate volume for analysis. if these
conditions are met, the sample will be assigned a unique log number for identification
throughout analysis and reporting. The log num er will be recorded on the chain-of-
custody card and in the legally required log book maintained at the laboratory. The
sample description, date received, client's name, and any other relevant information will
i
also be recorded. I
Decontamination Procedures
To prevent cross-contamination, downhole drilling equipment will be steam-cleaned
before use in each borehole. Soil sampling equipment and all pumps, bailers, and their
related tubing will be washed with laboratory-grade detergent and rinsed with tap water,
then deionized water, before sampling and development work. 11
Laboratory Analytical Quality Assurance
I
In addition to routine calibration of the instruments with standards and blanks and
preventive maintenance, the analyst is required to run spikes and duplicate spikes on
S percent of the analyses to ensure an added measure of precision and accuracy. IAccuracy
is also verified through the following: I
I.
