a <br /> a <br /> rr. <br /> CHAPTER 1 <br /> INTRODUCTION <br /> On December 23, 1986, an in-tank leak detector at ARCO Petroleum <br /> Products Company (ARCO) Service Station 434, located at 501 Kettleman <br /> Lane in Lodi, California, indicated a product loss, Subsequent <br /> F investigation by ARCO identified a loss that resulted from a leak in <br /> the product line leading from the unleaded gasoline underground <br /> storage tank to the dispenser. The leaking pipe has bee.i replaced. <br /> ARCO inventory control data for November and December 1986 show a <br /> total inventory loss of approximately 786 gallons of unleaded <br /> gasoline.. <br /> Agency Involvement <br /> On December 24, 1986, ARCO notified the San Joaquin Local Health <br /> �.. District, the local fire department, National Response Center, and <br /> g ! the California Office of Emergency Services of the product loss. On <br /> Fti March 16, 1987, the San Joaquin Local Health District reviewed and <br /> G approved the March 2, 1987, work plan prepared by Brown and Caldwell <br /> E -^� to conduct. investigative work. The work plan is included in . <br /> fi <br /> } Appendix A. s <br /> "* The . City of Lodi operates Municipal Well 12, approximately 240 <br /> feet from the leak site (see Figure 1-1) . Production from this well <br /> was stopped immediately, and water from the well was sampled for r <br /> gasoline constituents by the City of Lodi on December 29,. 1986. No <br /> gasoline constituents were identified. Laboratory results are <br /> included in Appendix B with the permission of the City of Lodi. Well <br /> 12 has been held out of service pending the results of the site <br /> investigation. <br /> 6 Site investigation <br /> �E <br /> During April 1987, a site investigation was conducted at the <br /> station b Brown and Caldwell.Y l The objectives of the investigation <br /> were to determine the groundwater gradient, identify product in soil <br /> and/or groundwater beneath the site, evaluate the site geology, and <br /> obtain information necessary for evaluating potential remedial <br /> actions at the site. The work was conducted as described in Brown <br /> {c i and .Caldwell's work plan.
