IMr Michael Walton a
Walton Engineering
August 4, 1998 _
DISCUSSION
IIncluding soil generated during the tank removal work and soil generated during the excavation work
for the new tank installation, a total of approximately 450 to 500 cubic yards of soil was removed
from the subsurface area of the former underground storage tanks at the site It is our understanding
that the stockpiled soil maternal has been removed from the site and transported by a licensed hauler
to Forward, Inc , of Stockton, California
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
I Based on the results of the soil sampling and laboratory analysis program, conducted by Grayland
during the tank removal work at the site, it appears that soul contamination has occurred beneath the
surface of the site as a result of the operation of the former underground fuel storage tank system
The highest concentrations of volatile organic oxygenates MtBE and tBA were detected in the soil
sample collected from the southern end of former underground storage tank T2 (apparent source
location)
Grayland recommends that a site contamination work plan be developed to assess the vertical extent
and magnitude of the subsurface contamination at the site To evaluate the vertical extent of
subsurface soil contamination and the potential for groundwater contanunatnon beneath the site, a
minimum of two soil borings should be completed at the site If subsurface soil contamination
liepersists with depth,at least one of the soil borings should extend to groundwater in order to establish
depth to groundwater beneath the site and to evaluate groundwater quality by collecting a
groundwater grab sample
' With your authorization, Grayland will forward a copy of this report to SJCEHD for their files
Thank you for the opportunity to provide our geological environmental consulting services to Walton
' Engineering
' Sincerely,
Grayland Environmental
65 rte.5597
' ` 1 EV6 0/99
VCU `
' Jeffrey A.
