SITE INVESTIGATION
Field reconnaissances were performed between June 14 and June 21 ,
1989. The reconnaissances included performing a visual surficial
observation of the property and conducting an inventory of the
surrounding properties and land uses.
The warehouse building is currently vacant. The floors and
offices are reasonably clean and free of debris. Notable items
within the building were a small (1-foot long) compressed gas
cylinder tagged as having contained a flammable or explosive gas,
a white and yellow crystalline residue covering a 10 ' x 10' floor
area, and water leaking into one of the west cooling/drying
chambers (see Figure 2) . The compressed gas cylinder and
crystalline residue are located in the southeast corner of the
building in an enclosure beneath some offices.
Although observations were made of the office and warehouse
spaces, an assessment of asbestos hazards in those areas was not
included in the scope of this investigation.
The remainder of the property is, for the most part, paved
with asphalt. A narrow strip of land surfaced with gravel
is located along the east edge of the property. The lot is
generally vacant, except for the storage of numerous stacks of
wood pallets. Two trucks and a truck-trailer are also stored on
the grounds.
The gravel storage area contains the bulk of the wood pallets as
well as the two trucks. Also found was a two-foot square,
24-cell battery on a pallette. The battery appears similar to
those used in electric forklifts. Ground staining was not
evident in the area.
The paved remainder of the lot was essentially clear, except for
the aforementioned pallets and truck-trailer in the rear of the
warehouse building. However, an open 55-gallon drum containing
liquid was found along the southern border of the lot. The drum
is labeled to contain flammable solvent. No ground staining was
evident in the area.
The subsurface investigation included drilling three ( 3 ) slanted
exploratory borings in the immediate vicinity of the UST' s
(see Figure 3 ) extending to a depth of 25 feet below the ground
surface. In addition, two shallow borings were drilled to obtain
near-surface soil samples in the unpaved storage area. The
__. borings were drilled on June 15, 1989 using an eight ( 8 ) inch,
nominal diameter, continuous flight hollow stem auger. The soils
encountered in the borings were visually classified in the field
under the supervision of a State of California certified
engineering geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System (Figure 4 ) . The boring logs depicting the
subsurface conditions are presented on Figures 5 through 9.
- 3 - BSK
Rr Associ itv,;
