page 2, 24100 Lammers
In correspondence dated January 27, 2003, SJCI HD conditionally approved "Work Plan
--- - - Excavation and Monitoring Well Installation"dated December.l0, 2002, also.submitted by.__.
MJK on your behalf. Installation of the monitoring Wells. discussed in the Report
completes a portion of this work pian. Over-excavation of up to approximately 1400 cubic
yards of both uncontaminated and contaminated s it must be completed to finish
implementation of the approved work plan. Please schedule this work. As previously
discussed, soils must be segregated, clean from d rty, during the over-excavation process,
and less expensive options for remediation of the contaminated soil, such as onsite
aeration, are available and should be explored. M nitoring well MW-4 appears to be in
the path of the soil plume and will likely need to be destroyed prior to the over-excavation,
and reinstalled afterwards. SJCIEHD recommend 3 installing a new well approximately
20-25 feet east of the MW-5/MW-1 05 cluster, to place it more in line with the down-
gradient groundwater flow direction and apparent As of impacted soil. A contingency
plan for dewatering-the excavation should be in place in case this becomes an issue. The
addition of an oxygen-releasing compound to the open excavation prior to backfilling has
been removed from the work plan due to cost considerations, and has SJCIEHD approval.
The deadline for final implementation of the over-E xcavation portion of the work plan is
February 25, 2005.
If you have any questions please call Lori Duncan at (209) 465-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Department
t oL,•-. r
Lori Duncan, Senior REHS Nuel C.
