The Macrocore allowed for continuous soil sampling for lithology
identification and the collection of soil in butyrate liners for laboratory analysis. During this
' investigation, groundwater samples were collected from inside a hydropunch drive casing using
a peristaltic pump. A hydropunch is a small diameter core barrel with a 3 foot steel screen
telescoped inside the barrel. The core barrel is pushed into the ground to a selected depth, then
pulled back to expose the screen to the water bearing zone. Groundwater flows through the
' screen into the barrel and is pumped or bailed to the surface.
3.1.2.2 Precision Model XD-3
The Precision Model XD-3 is a hydraulically-powered, percussion/probing machine mounted on
a 4-wheel drive loader that relies on a relatively small amount of static (vehicle) weight
combined with percussion and a vibratory head to push through soil at shallow depths. An
Enviro-Core sampling device is advanced into the soil using a hammer that has a driving force of
' 250 foot-pounds. The Enviro-Core system consists of a 3.5-inch diameter drive casing and an
inner sample barrel. Soil cores are collected in stainless steel liners inside the sample barrel.
After being advanced approximately 3 feet, the full sample barrel is retrieved while the drive
casing is left in place to prevent the probe hole from collapsing. The Model XD-3 rig was only
used to collect soil samples during this field investigation.
' 3.1.2.3 Precision Model SD-1
The Precision Model SD-1 is a hydraulically-powered, percussion/probing machine with a
vibratory head. It is a large truck-mounted rig that relies on the truck's weight combined with a
' percussion and a vibratory head and is especially effective in difficult soil conditions. The
Enviro-Core sampling device is advanced into the soil using a hammer that has a driving force of
500 foot-pounds. Soil cores are collected in the same manner as the Model XD-3 rig. During
this investigation groundwater was collected from inside a 1-inch PVC screen with 0.01-inch
i
' 6
' 25970119.DGD 13 December 1999
