1 Readwell&Rolb
No significant metal concentrations were detected in soil collected at Area 2A during this
investigation. However, two soil samples collected during the 1996 soil sampling program
contained elevated concentrations of arsenic at 69 mg/kg and 130 mg/kg.
Groundwater contamination was found in 10 of the 11 monitoring wells sampled. Well MW-8,
located in the northeast corner of Area 2A, was the only well that did not contain petroleum fuel
' hydrocarbons, and semivolatile compounds. The highest concentration of TPH as gasoline was
found at well MW-13 (130 mg/1), located north of the former L&M Petroleum site. MW-6,
located in the eastern portion of the site in the general area of the former Morton Paint Company,
had 88.9 mg/l TPH as gasoline. Other significant concentrations of TPH as gasoline were found
1 in wells MW-1 (19.5 mg/1), and MW-9 (5.53 mg/1).
1 TPH as diesel was found at the greatest concentrations at wells MW-13 (11 mg/1), MW-14
(13 mg/l and duplicate sample 2AMW16 at 18 mg/1), and MW-9 (6.3 mg/1). TPH as motor oil
was found MW-14 at 4.7 and 3.5 mg/1.
' BTEX compounds were highest at MW-9 and MW-13, with benzene at 15 mg/l at MW-13 and
3.16 mg/l at MW-9.
While no halogenated volatile organic compounds were detected in groundwater at Area 2A,
several fuel-related volatile organic compounds were detected at wells MW-1 and 9. These
compounds, none of which exceeded 1.01 mg/1, included 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (1.01 mg/1) and
naphthalene (0.52 mg/1) at MW-2A and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene at MW-9.
No significant metal contamination in groundwater was detected in any wells at Area 2A.
Test pits 2ATP-1 and 2ATP-2 were opened in the area of the geophysical anomalies found on the
former Morton Paint facility. While buried debris and utility lines were uncovered, there was no
' evidence of underground storage tanks. Test pit 2ATP-4, opened in the general area of the
boundary between the former L&M Petroleum and Union Oil facilities, exhibited a strong
14
' 25970119.DGD 13 December 1999
