1
HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
VOLUME ASSUMPTIONS AND CALCULATIONS
Volume of impacted soil removed from the vicinity of the former AST during the over-excavation
procedures:
Based on the hydrocarbon concentration of TPH-g in excavated stockpile soil samples and highest
concentration of TPH-g in soil at the base of the over excavation, the following calculation for the
removed the petroleum as diesel has been made.
This volume was calculated from soil sample data and the wight of the soil stockpiled from the
excavations. A total of 52.5 tons of impacted soil were disposed with an average concentration of
300 milligrams per kilogram of gasoline, 1,900 milligrams per kilogram of diesel and 15,000
milligrams per kilogram of motor oil.
Calculation:
tons - 2000 pounds/ton =pounds soil
pounds soil - 0.454 kilograms/lbs =kilograms soil
kilograms soil - average concentration in mg/kg of petroleum=milligrams of petroleum
milligrams of petroleum- 1,000 milligram/grams=grams of petroleum
volume
grams of petroleum_ 0.8 grams/cm3 = cm3 of petroleum
(cm3 of diesel _ 3,785 cm"gallon) = gallons of petroleum removed
weight
52.5 tons removed - 2000 pounds/ton= 105,000 pounds soil
105,000 pounds soil - 0.454 kilograms/lbs= 47,670 kilograms soil
47,670 kilograms soil - 5,733 mg/kg of petroleum= 2,733,308,000 milligrams of petroleum
2,733,308,000 milligrams of petroleum _ 1,000 milligram/grams = 273308 grams of petroleum
volume
273308 grams of petroleum- 0.8 grams/cm3 = 341635 cm3 of petroleum
(341635 cm3 of petroleum_ 3,785 CM3/gallon) = 90 gallons of petroleum removed
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
