Mr. Jeff Wong TreadvvelUMIo
22 November 1999
Page 2
SCOPE OF WORK
Our proposed scope of work includes reviewing past site use, previous investigation and
remedial work in the area, and conducting a soil and groundwater investigation. The proposed
soil and groundwater investigation is designed to assess whether hazardous materials are present
in the site soil and/or groundwater resulting from current and past activities at the site and
adjacent properties. Figures 2 illustrates the proposed soil boring locations for the site. The
sampling locations have been selected to target historic operations that may have used hazardous
materials, and to provide general site coverage.
Sampling and Analyses
Soil borings will be advanced using a Geoprobe direct push rig. Soil samples will be retained in
stainless steel or acetate sleeves, covered with Teflon tape and plastic end caps. Groundwater
samples will be collected in a pre-cleaned stainless, Teflon, or disposable polyethylene bailer,
and decanted into the appropriate laboratory supplied containers. All samples will be retained in
a cooler on ice and sent to a state certified laboratory using chain of custody procedures.
Treadwell & Rollo proposes to advance 11 soil borings with a Geoprobe rig at the Marina Tower
Parcel. Five borings will be 4-feet deep, four borings will be 8-feet deep, and two will be 25 to
30 feet deep. Soil samples will be collected continuously for logging purposes, and selected
samples (approximately 2 per boring)will be submitted to an analytical laboratory for chemical
analyses. Grab groundwater samples will be collected from the two deepest borings to help
evaluate potential groundwater contamination.
The borings will be backfilled with a neat cement bentonite slurry after the samples have been
collected. All drilling and sampling equipment will be steam-cleaned prior to each use. The soil
cuttings and decontamination rinsate will be contained in drums on site and disposed of under a
separate scope of work once the analytical results are known.
The exact number of samples to be analyzed for each particular analysis will depend on
conditions encountered during drilling. Following is a proposed analytical program for the site.
• Soil samples collected from each boring will be analyzed for total lead, and selected
samples will also be analyzed for total cadmium, chromium, nickel and zinc. Depending
upon the results, soluble analyses for metals may be recommended.
• Selected samples will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline,
diesel and motor oil by EPA Method 8015M, and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and
xylenes (BTEX)by EPA Method 8020.
